WiTH SPRiNG ON iT'S WAY, jESSiCA ALBARN SHOWS US EXACTLY WHERE TO LOOK.

Our most recent artist addition at EDiT. is the wonderful Jessica Albarn. Jessica’s work spans many mediums but her central concerns are consistent - that of ecological sustainability and engagement with nature. We have some of Jessica’s drawings in the gallery; hummingbirds, and bees beautifully rendered with precision and expertise. Jessica’s skill comes from active appreciation and study of the natural world, and the simplicity of her work allows the creatures she depicts to beam and glimmer on the page.

Jessica has always been creatively minded, and studied sculpture, painting, drawing and printmaking at Middlesex University, London. Her practice centers around a desire to raise awareness for different creatures and their modern day plight. Jessica’s recognition of the damage inflicted on the natural world has led to her creation of an ‘insect friendly’ meadow in Devon. The habitat aims to support bees and local wildlife whilst also being a rich source of inspiration, exploration and information for Jessica’s art practice. Jessica’s work goes hand in hand with the nature it depicts, and could not exist without an energetic acknowledgment of complex ecosystems.

Jessica loves the immediacy of drawing, when all you need is something with which to make a mark. She lets the pencil lead and follows her eye rather than consciously planning out every piece. Jessica’s way of working feels intune with the content of her work - a natural state of play and experimentation.

Jessica places the animals she details, not within their natural environments, but within sacred geometry. Associated with a belief in divinity, the universal geometry Jessica uses is present in the forms and patterns of our natural world when viewed at a cellular level.

By using such ancient mathematics, Jessica tethers the animals she depicts not to their specific habitats but to a broader, ubiquitous, pattern making world.

Interested in how we as humans project our feelings and experiences onto our natural environment, Jessica also draws on folklore, alchemy and broader scientific ideas as well as the living world she depicts. Her work feels as though it is saying; here we are, all the creatures of the world, connected.

For Jessica, drawing works to deepen our understanding of the world we live in, her drawing practice allows her to study creatures in more detail than she might otherwise. She hopes that people look at her work and see the beauty and detail of nature as well as the interconnectedness of all living things.

At a time when the climate crisis is looming especially large, Jessica’s work provides alternative medicine and a strong message; protecting the natural world begins with acknowledging the beauty we are at risk of losing.

We are delighted to be working with Jessica Albarn, and hope that you too appreciate the delicate beauty of her work. Come down to the gallery and have a look at our offerings.
