LOUiSE NORDH - ONCE UPON A SPLAT.

Louise depicts everyday scenes with nostalgia, craftsmanship, and humour—creating work that feels deeply human. She is an observer, taking in her surroundings and the world around her, using these moments as inspiration.

Based in South East London, Louise is local to the gallery so she popped in and spoke to us about her practice, creative journey, and what she loves about being an artist in London in anticipation of her upcoming show here at EDiT. Read on to learn more about what makes Louise tick, her relationship to creativity, and how she came to create her signature SPLATs. Each SPLAT is a little story in itself - Louise’s intuitive approach harnesses a unique freedom and demonstrates her personal relationship with painting.

WHERE: EDiT. Gallery, 2 Greenwich Market, London.  SE10 9HZ.

WHEN: Preview Evening 6pm-8.30pm on the 26th June. Show runs until the 7th July inline with the galleries opening hours.

Louise’s SPLATs are explosions of colour, each piece a vibrant burst. Beginning her creative journey in graphic design, Louise credits this time with influencing her work in terms of colour palettes and composition. However, she eventually felt called to a freer way of creating—though she admits that having a toddler may have also played a part in learning to give up control over the details…

"EVERY DAY LiFE iNSPiRES ME AND OFTEN A PHRASE OR CONVERSATiON SPARKS AN iDEA THAT i WANT TO TRY AND CAPTURE SOMEHOW"

- Louise talking about her inspriations.

She prefers to let viewers take what they want from her work. Louise loves that people are drawn to her work for entirely different reasons. The intention behind her painting can be vastly different from the interpretation someone else brings to it—and that’s a welcomed part of the creative exchange.

She’s had her fair share of memorable encounters with viewers. One that stands out is when a woman cried while looking at one of her pieces. Louise describes the experience as surreal. After gently confirming that it was, in fact, a good cry, the moment became a core memory for her—evidence of the power of creativity in forming connections and building community.

In the studio, Louise takes a fluid approach to her work. She starts with an idea but allows it to shift and evolve as the piece develops, embracing happy accidents along the way.

"iT'S EXCiTiNG WHEN A PAiNTiNG iS STARTiNG TO COME TOGETHER - i REALLY ENJOY THAT."

She often works on many pieces at once. Especially when working with thicker paints and layers, she finds it important to let the paint dry and breathe. Returning to a work with fresh eyes helps her see more clearly what needs to change.

With the SPLATs, Louise loves that they can’t be fully understood until you’re up close. From a distance, they appear as abstract blobs—but upon closer inspection, you discover the little characters hidden within. It’s this element of surprise and discovery that is so exciting.

Louise Nordh brings a thoughtful, open-ended approach to art making. She allows her ideas—and a healthy dose of intuition—to guide her as she creates her SPLATs, drawing from everyday life and lived experience. Come and experience Louise’s brilliant work in person at EDiT. in her solo show Once Upon a Splat.
