CiTY STORiES: KETHi COPELAND.

This November EDiT is delighted to present CiTY STORiES, a solo show by London-based artist Kethi Copeland. Running from 14 to 19 November at our Greenwich space, with an opening on Thursday 13 November from 6pm to 8pm, the exhibition brings together Copeland’s distinctive prints that capture the layered essence of city life.

You can read about Kethi's practice and RSVP to her opening event below.

“THE ONLY WAY TO WORK OUT WHAT COLOURS WORK BEST TOGETHER iS TO PRiNT THEM AND SEE HOW EVERYTHiNG WORKS iN COMBiNATiON”.

For Kethi, it is about balance and precision, and the results are evident in her beautifully layered works.

Kethi’s artworks are thoughtful and calming, punctuated with unexpected pops of colour. These delicate scenes of places we recognise are the result of a considered and attentive practice. Her work offers new viewpoints and perspectives, always reaching for balance in colour, line, and composition. These prints are not only depictions of place but reflections on how cities connect to us through memory, senses, and shared experience.

Cities are living records, shaped by architecture, culture, and the people who pass through them. A place becomes a setting for human behaviour, a mirror of the viewpoints of its inhabitants as well as those who simply encounter it. Copeland’s works hold this layered quality, drawing viewers in with both recognition and surprise. They work as conversation starters; people gather round, spot a familiar landmark, and share their own unique connections, weaving memories into the artworks.

We are hosting Kethi’s solo show CiTY STORiES at EDiT. Greenwich, the perfect location to showcase her work. Kethi loves the patchwork of new and old architecture that makes London so unique and Greenwich is a place rich with it. She is also a true South East London local, with her studio based in Deptford, and her connection to the area runs throughout her practice. Her depictions of London are not only images of a place, but tender expressions of what it feels like to know and belong to a place.

Kethi largely works as a screenprinter and divides her practice into what she calls seasons. The drawing season comes first, where she spends time outside sketching in place, often returning multiple times to build her studies. The second season takes place in the studio where drawings are turned into stencils for screen printing and the design is carefully worked into layers. The third season is the printing itself.

Her studio is kept clean and orderly, a necessity given the complexity of her process. While she admits she enjoys the occasional happy accident of a smudge or misprint, she prefers to keep these playful mistakes from leaving the studio.

“THERE’S SO MUCH I LOVE ABOUT PRiNTMAKING, ONE OF MY FAVOURiTE THiNGS IS REGiSTERING THE DiFFERENT LAYERS VERY TiGHTLY, iT BRiNGS ME A LOT OF JOY WHEN THiS GOES RiGHT”.

Printmaking can be challenging and frustrating, she says, but the satisfaction of working through the process and problem solving is part of the reward.

Being hands on is central to her practice. Kethi loves to work on a print over an extended period of time, layering and refining until the final image emerges. This patient and tactile approach reflects her way of engaging with the city itself. She takes time to walk, observe, and immerse herself in her surroundings. Cities are layered places and she enjoys capturing that complexity, whether it is a skyline, a street of contrasting buildings, or the overlooked details of shopfronts and everyday life.

Her inspiration comes directly from these environments. The patchwork of city life, with its mix of architecture and nature breaking through, appeals strongly to her practice.

“WHEN YOU SPEND A LONG TiME DRAWiNG A PLACE, i FEEL LiKE YOU GET TO KNOW iT BETTER AND REALLY APPRECiATE iT”

Sharing her work is just as important as creating it. Kethi loves to see the emotional responses her prints evoke and the memories they unlock for viewers. She treasures the way people connect with a piece and the fact that these captured places and stories go on to live in people’s homes.
